Hip Extension
Treatment and Results
The patient is a 76 female with diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease, lumbar spine degenerative disc disease, and thoracolumbar scoliosis. The patient was referred to physical therapy for treatment of her posture, low back pain, gait. At her initial evaluation patient’s hip extension was 0 degrees bilaterally. She was limited to standing for 5 minutes, walking 100 yards over even terrain and was unable to play badminton secondary to pain. Following 5 weeks of motor control coaching using the GyroCoach as an external focus while supported by a LifeGlider walker performing a series of hip extension exercises the patient’s hip extension improved to 15 degrees bilaterally. She is able to stand for 30 minutes, walk 1/2 mile over even and uneven terrain, and is able to play badminton for 3 hours without pain.
