Treatment and Results
Patient is an 82 year old male with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease who was referred to physical therapy for treatment of hyperkyphosis and balance. At his initial evaluation patient’s thoracic spine kyphosis index was 20 and his Dynamic Gait index was 15/24. At the end of his first session using the GyroCoach to restore thoracic extension this patient’s thoracic spine kyphosis index improved to 14. During subsequent sessions patient used the GyroCoach as a visual cue when performing balance activities on firm and compliant surfaces. After 4 weeks of treatment patient’s Dynamic Gait Index improved to 19/24. At 3 months his thoracic spine kyphosis index was 14 and his Dynamic Gait Index was 20/24. He was reassessed at 9 months and his thoracic spine kyphosis index was 15 and his Dynamic Gait Index continued to be 20/24.Patient was no longer a fall risk after 4 weeks of treatment using the GyroCoach as an external focus during his physical therapy treatment restoring posture and balance.
